Not to be confused with Isopon or Polyfilla, there are various cosmetic “fillers”, and the preferred ones contain a naturally occurring substance hyaluronic acid, which is completely absorbable in 9 – 12 months. The better-known brands are Teosyal, Restylane, Puragen, and they contain hyaluronic acid that is from non-animal sources (NASHA).

Why do patients want filler treatments?

The natural aging process leads to a loss of volume in the face, which may cause deep creases or fine lines to appear. Treatment with soft tissue fillers can help soften these lines, and give them a more youthful appearance.

Are there any reasons to not have fillers?

Patients who are on blood-thinning medications such as Aspirin or Warfarin or with active infection are advised not to have fillers injected.

Are there any side effects or complications?

Any procedure that introduces additional volume under the skin may lead to slight bruising or swelling, which usually settles in a few days. There maybe minor unevenness under the skin which will normally resolve within 6 – 8 weeks.
